Press Release Body = Traditionally January is the month of abstinence and health consciousness after the excesses of Christmas. Come the new year, people all over the country climb onto their scales and shudder at the pounds they have piled on over the festive season. Ashamed of the way they indulged in mince pies and chocolate, they vow to turn over a healthy leaf and nourish their bodies with fruit and vegetables to flush out the harmful toxins they have absorbed.
However, this January a number of scientists spoke out against the nation's efforts encouraging them to abandon detox diets in favour of tap water and early nights.
Elizabeth Harfleet, a Manchester based nutritionist, is horrified. She argues that although drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep is vital for health living, the benefit of a detox diet should not be underestimated.
"A detox diet, whether undertaken alone or with the support of a practitioner, can provide the incentive to take charge of health and wellbeing and make a fresh start. Our bodies are constantly struggling to shed excess toxins, so taking steps to remove them and not add to them either has to be a positive step. A detox diet rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, light proteins, water and freshly made juices, in addition to any herbal cleansing products which may be used, can help to give any health initiative a real kick start".
